Safely c ompleted the second and last leg of the long drive home. Left Montgomery at about 8:30 am and arrived in Austin at 11:00 pm. Interestingly, it was 800 miles over four states, and you could do the same 800 miles on I-10 and never leave Texas. Could have been a bit shorter of a day, but we had a couple of longish stops for food and leg stretches. Worst part of the day was the assholes in their lifted bro trucks with 30 million candlepower headlights driving like maniacs east of Houston. Whole trip was just a smidge over 3,500 miles.

Those states do get suspiciously big down in the South. Going Houston to Boston, I was in three states day one, two states day two, and then six day three (and I easily could have made it eight with a slightly different route). And that was just coming from a place in TX near the eastern border.

We did five states on our first day coming home. So nine states in two days. But yes, the states do shrink as you head east.

I’ll be making the Baton Rouge to Houston leg tomorrow. Any new weirdness awaiting me?

In 2016, my wife and I did a coast-to-coast trip from Jacksonville, Florida to San Diego, California. I-10 across Texas was a full 1/3rd of the trip. Yes, Texas is a big state.

Reminds me of an old, old joke: A Texan is talking to a man from India, and is wanting to impress him with how big Texas is. The Texan says, “In Texas, you can get on a train on one side of the state , and ride for days without leaving Texas .” The man from India replies, “Yes, our train service is really bad, too...” :-D

Ha, Shreveport and Lake Charles are both cities I frequent.

New weirdness? The extremely shitty west LA roads probably aren’t new. One lane of the eastbound I-10 bridge in Lake Charles was closed last night and the backup stretched for miles. Don’t know if it was a wreck or construction.  We also got hung up in a wreck that blocked the top of the bridge in Baton Rouge. But otherwise, it’s the same old same old.

One lane of the big bridge in Lake Charles was closed last night, right at 6:00 when the shifts were changing at the giant chemical plants. The backup eastbound was truly epic. Thank god I was going west.

Wrecks on the bridge in Baton Rouge are par for the course. I guess I was really wondering the status of the construction along I-10. They like to get started on Friday afternoon and work through Sunday night.

I think we were just ahead of the weekend construction closures. In Houston, as we left town on 290, they literally started blocking the road right behind us.

Lucky dog. I often have to take detours around Orange and Beaumont because of lane closures due to construction on Sunday evenings . If there’s a wreck on the Mississippi River bridge, I’ll detour to the old bridge a few miles north. That detour happens just about every Friday return trip because I get back to Baton Rouge around 5:00 and have to deal with rush hour.

Commuting this far sucks, but I’m learning to deal with it.

Double check that Lake Charles closure. It might have been construction. Even 210 was backed up badly.

Thanks. I’ll do that. Waze is showing some eastbound traffic buildup right now. That doesn’t bode well for tomorrow. Perhaps I’ll divert up to US-190 this week.

Do you make that drive daily or weekly?

Weekly. To Houston on Sundays, back to Baton Rouge on Fridays. Next weekend I will stay in Houston to fly. That cuts down on the driving, but I end up paying for a hotel and meals.
